Dermabrasion Overview

Dermabrasion, also known as skin planing, is an anti-aging cosmetic plastic surgery procedure used to help refinish your skin’s top layer. Although it was first used to treat only acne scars or chicken pox marks, today dermabrasion treats other skin conditions as well, including sun damage, pigmentation, wrinkles, age spots or even tattoos. Dermabrasion is not able to treat burn marks, certain types of moles or pigmented birth marks. During the procedure your doctor will use a rotary abrasive instrument to literally sand and scrape your skin to improve its contour. Dermabrasion leaves your skin with a smoother, more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

This technique should not be confused with “micro-dermabrasion” which is a similar procedure used to treat minor skin problems. If you are considering dermabrasion, other anti-aging procedures which may accomplish similar purposes are micro-dermabrasion, chemical peel and laser skin resurfacing.
